Hey there! I’m Sam Joson-Nish. I’m a Southern California–born daughter of Filipino immigrants, and I’m deeply passionate about supporting my community through birthwork and health education. I aim to bring calm, curiosity, empathy and lots of encouragement to every birth.
My path to doula work was a bit winding but always meaningful: I started as a journalist writing about comprehensive sex ed and women’s empowerment, then worked with little ones as an early childhood educator teaching emotional and social skills. Those paths share a through line: a commitment to health education, reproductive justice, and building caring communities — values that guide my doula work.
I’m proud all of that has led me so wonderfully here.
I completed my birth doula training in June 2025 through SMC Full Circle Doula Birth Companion Training. I'm also proud to be working with Community Doula Alliance. Both of these amazing organizations recognize the systemic inequities that birthing people, especially those of color, face and aim to improve maternal and infant health outcomes with accessible, long term culturally specific care.
When I’m not with clients, you’ll find me playing video games, singing at home, traveling, or curled up with a weird little horror novel or a gentle Japanese healing story. I love a good period drama, hunting for yummy desserts and a good cocktail with my husband, neighborhood cat-spotting, and feeding one too many quarters into arcade claw machines.
I welcome anyone and everyone. Like, truly. All ages, relationship statuses and structures, gender identities, trauma histories, sexualities, religions, and races will be welcomed and treated with the utmost kindness, respect, cultural sensitivity, care, and love. That being said, I totally recognize that sometimes culturally specific care is what will work best for someone's journey. If culturally specific care would better serve you, I’ll gladly refer you to a doula or organization that’s the best fit.
